Hospitals have for centuries been considered safe havens immigrants and people on the move. However, migrants who seek health care also targeted exclusion deportation. This article discusses history of how hospitals facilities in United States acted both as sanctuaries sites immigration enforcement. debate came to a head California 1970s, when conservatives began attacking local public facilities’ informal sanctuary practices. Following battles, which culminated Proposition 187 1994, immigrant rights movements increasingly connected calls with demands right care.
